Ethiopia bans migration

On 24th October 2013 the Ethiopian government announced its decision to temporarily stop its citizens travelling abroad to seek work opportunities. The Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying that the decision was intended to “safeguard the well-being of its citizens”. As a result of this ban, which will remain in place until a “lasting solution is found”, employment agencies will not be allowed to facilitate travel abroad. However, given that many of the Ethiopians who experience rights abuses are using irregular migration routes, the impact of the ban remains to be seen. To read more please click here
